Lump-sum Deduction

Definition
A fixed deduction that may be taken in lieu of separate, itemized deductions when the allowable fixed deduction exceeds the sum of itemized deductions. The amount of the lump sum deduction is based on the filing status of the taxpayer with a higher deduction allowed for joint filers. Also called a standard deduction.
