Apportionment

Definition
Prorating property expenses, like taxes and insurance, between the buyer and the seller of a property. Typically used to divide yearly costs between the two parties. For example, if a property is purchased on July 1, the seller may pay 50 percent of the tax liability for that year, and the buyer will be responsible for the other 50 percent.
