Capacity Utilization

Definition
A monthly report that measures excess U.S. manufacturing capacity. Some economists believe that manufacturing output that exceeds 85 percent of industrial capacity creates inflationary pressures on the economy. Capacity utilization is a component of a joint report that also includes industrial production. The report is released by the Federal Reserve around the 15th of the month and is based on data collected for the prior month.
