Wildcat Banking

Definition
A historical term used to describe the conduct of state chartered banks that were established by corrupt business people who sought to benefit from the bank's activities at the expense of the depositors. When their corrupt activities were uncovered, the bankers would hide out in the wilderness among the wild animals which is the basis of the term.
