Interstate Banking

Definition
The banking expansion that crosses state lines from acquired holding companies. Legislation in the 1980s permitted holding companies to purchase banks in other states, which led to a rise in interstate banking. The Neal Interstate Banking and Branching Efficiency Act of 1995 allowed acquisitions anywhere in the United States, leading to regional and national chains.
