Stop-running

Definition
A practice among professional traders of pushing the price of a stock up (or down) through a resistance (or support) level where they believe investors have placed stop orders. When the stop orders are hit, they trigger market orders and/or limit orders, which cause a spike (or drop) in the price at which point the professionals reverse their positions and ride the stock in the opposite direction.
