Leverage Up

Definition
An increase in a company's amount of debt, used frequently during the 1980's as a way to prevent hostile takeovers. When a company leverages up, they issue a bond as a way to provide financing for expansion of operations. Publicly traded companies may do this to buy back its own stock which in turn increases the share price.
