Government Sponsored Enterprise (GSE)

Definition
Created by the United States Congress, a privately held corporation in the financial sector. These corporations were created for the purpose of helping reduce the cost of credit to certain groups of people. GSEs include the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) and the Federal Home Loan Bank System. Sallie Mae was originally created as a GSE as well, however the company later switched to become a private institution.
