Transfer On Death (TOD)

Definition
A contractual option that allows an owner of certain property to designate a beneficiary that will receive the property following the death of the owner. This designation is used as a part of securities registration, automobile purchase contracts and real estate transactions in various US states. Invoking a TOD clause allows the beneficiary to receive the property directly rather than entering the statutory probate system.
