Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS)
Definition
A classification system for domestic and international stocks formed through a joint venture of Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) and Standard & Poor's, with the aim of classifying stocks with standardized industry definitions. GICS consists of ten sectors, split into 24 industry groups, 67 industries and 147 sub-industries. Any stock organized within the system bears coding on these four levels.
